For the first time ever, Samsung has released a second major OS upgrade for a mainstream
Galaxy J series phone. It has been known for a while that the Galaxy J7 (2016) would be getting Oreo, and it looks like the update has arrived in some countries in the last couple of days. Samsung’s official roadmap in the Samsung Members app says the update is scheduled for November, but the rollout may have begun in late October for some.
Galaxy J7 (2016) Oreo update not widely available yet
Complete Android Oreo firmware for the device seem to be unavailable at the moment, though. Smart Switch won’t say there’s an update, either, so it may just be available over the air. For now, it seems the Galaxy J7 (2016) Oreo update is out in some European countries. It’s unclear if the Galaxy J5 (2016) will also be updated to Oreo. If sales numbers are the major factor for Samsung bringing a second major upgrade to the J series phones, the update may only be released for the J7.
But nothing can be said for certain at the moment. The J7 (2016) Oreo update is based on Android 8.1 and comes with Samsung Experience 9.5. Its software version is J710FXXU5CRJ8. If you own the device, you can check of the update from the Settings » Software update menu on the phone. It will be around 1GB in size, so make sure to use a Wi-Fi connection for the download.
Have you received Oreo on your Galaxy J7 (2016)? If yes, do tell us what country you’re in and how the phone is running after the update.
